Today, with reverence and spiritual joy, we celebrate Ilinden\u2014the great event in our national and ecclesiastical history, the day on which we honor the memory of the holy and glorious Prophet Elijah, while also remembering the patriotic and courageous struggle of our forefathers for freedom, justice, and honor.<\/div>\n

Today’s celebration is deeply engraved in the memory of our freedom-loving people. For Ilinden is not merely a festive commemoration, but a remembrance that transforms us, reminding us both of the God-pleasing deeds of the Holy Prophet Elijah and of the glorious Ilinden heroes, calling us to preserve their faith and steadfastness as our example and guiding light.<\/div>\n

Holy Scripture bears witness to the Prophet Elijah as a confessor of the living God many centuries before Christ. Distinguished by exceptional faith and righteousness, he stood against the actions of the king and queen of his time, who had fallen away from the true God.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Although he lived under the Old Covenant, Saint Elijah also appeared in the New Testament, on Mount Tabor together with Moses during the Transfiguration of Christ.\u00b2 And before the end of the world he will come again, as we sing in his troparion: *”An angel in the flesh, the pillar of the prophets, the second Forerunner of Christ’s coming.”\u00b3<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Beloved in the Lord,<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

We honor the Prophet Elijah as a seer of God and a zealous defender of God’s word, as one who rebuked lawless rulers and false prophets. Such was Saint Elijah: a guardian of God’s covenant, a constant witness to God, and an awakener of sleeping consciences. Therefore, our people chose his feast as the day on which the Macedonian nation rose in uprising.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Even today, in a time when moral values are being undermined throughout the world and when many seek to impose false beliefs, may Saint Elijah remain our example to follow. His life closely resembles the history of the Macedonian people\u2014a history marked by suffering, yet also by hope; by defeats, yet also by resurrections. The brave Ilinden revolutionaries did not fear those who could kill the body,\u2074 but courageously rose against five centuries of oppression. Having faith in God, they were prepared to sacrifice themselves so that future generations might live in freedom. It was precisely on Ilinden that they began their struggle for liberty\u2014the struggle to remain masters in their own homeland and to stand with dignity before history.<\/div>\n

Indeed, Macedonian history knows three Ilindens. The first, in 1903, when the Macedonian people rose in revolt. The second, the ASNOM Ilinden of 1944, affirmed the right to our own statehood. The third, in 1991, brought independence, and although only to part of the Macedonian homeland, we finally welcomed a free and independent state.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

These three Ilindens are not merely dates; they testify that Macedonia has existed and continues to exist, living in the hearts of her children, while our freedom is the fruit of the spiritual maturity and sacrifice of our forefathers. Yet freedom is not something granted once and for all\u2014it is an achievement that must continually be safeguarded. Therefore, let us stand firm in the freedom with which Christ has made us free, and let us not again submit to the yoke of slavery.\u2075<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Beloved lovers of our homeland,<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n

We, the heirs of the glorious Ilinden heroes, likewise stand at a historic crossroads, confronted by new storms and new trials. Our generation, too, is called to continue the Ilinden struggle and to preserve that which was gained through immense suffering and sacrifice.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
As the Macedonian people, Ilinden calls us to repentance and to a return to our holy values: faith, justice, honor, and dignity. Only if we are honest, faithful, and active members of the Church\u2014only if we unite and reconcile as one people\u2014shall we endure and remain steadfast, striving to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.\u2076<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Beloved children of our Mother, the Macedonian Church,<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

During those times when we had no state of our own, it was the Church that preserved us through every earthly storm. Within her were safeguarded not only the Orthodox faith, but also education and literacy, culture and national consciousness. She was the people’s home, where the dignity of the Macedonian person was preserved. Today as well, our Church remains a living and vigilant Mother, constantly reminding us that without faith in Christ there is neither salvation nor national survival.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Therefore, as a biblical people, let us always strive to remain children of God, filled with love for God, love for our homeland, and love for our fellow human beings. Let us be a people who remember and live the glorious Ilinden. Let us preserve the Ilinden ideals, for only in this way shall we hand them down as an inheritance and sacred trust to future Macedonian generations, wherever they may live. Following the example of Saint Elijah, let us remain vigilant and zealously preserve the faith of our forefathers, for by safeguarding our faith we shall also preserve our Church, our Homeland, and our national identity.<\/div>\n

In these festive days, let us pray to the all-merciful God to grant rest in His heavenly kingdom to the souls of all those who sacrificed themselves for the freedom of Macedonia. May their memory be eternal, and may God protect and bless us, their descendants. Amen.<\/div>\n
