MACEDONIAN REVOLUTIONARY STRUGGLE DAY AND THE 40TH ANNIVERSARY OF ARCHBISHOP ANGELARIJ’S REPOSE WITH “GUARDIANS OF THE FAITH AND THE MACEDONIAN IDEAL”

Prayerful remembrance of the late Archbishop Angelarij and a tribute to Macedonian national figures brought Macedonians in Melbourne together in a shared celebration of their Orthodox faith, distinct church identity and national ideal.

On 24 October 2026, the Macedonian Orthodox Community of Melbourne and Victoria marked Macedonian Revolutionary Struggle Day and the 40th anniversary of Archbishop Angelarij’s repose with a commemorative event entitled “Guardians of the Faith and the Macedonian Ideal”.

The commemoration took place at St George and the Most Holy Mother of God Church in Epping, Melbourne, the oldest Macedonian Orthodox church in the diaspora and a spiritual home to generations of Macedonians.

The programme included a memorial service and the laying of flowers at the monument to Goce Delčev, honouring Macedonian national figures and their struggle for freedom and dignity.

The memorial service, conducted by the parish priest, Father Kliment Stankovski, was followed by a cultural programme featuring a performance by the Svetlost Cultural and Artistic Association and a community gathering.

The event was opened by the President of the church community, Mr Dejan Zmejkovski, who emphasised the importance of honouring historical figures whose lives and achievements contributed to the Macedonian national cause. In his address, he highlighted the significant role of Macedonian church communities in Australia in preserving the distinct national identity of Macedonians in the diaspora. Through worship, cultural activities and community life, these communities nurture the Orthodox faith while preserving Macedonian national identity, language and traditions for future generations across Australia.

Prayerful remembrance of Archbishop Angelarij held a special place in the commemoration, reflecting his direct connection with the Macedonian community in Melbourne. In 1961, he was appointed parish priest at St George the Great Martyr Church in Fitzroy, Melbourne, where he served until 1964. For the Macedonian Orthodox Community of Melbourne and Victoria, remembering Archbishop Angelarij is also an expression of gratitude to a priest who contributed to the development of its organised church life. Four decades after his repose, his legacy lives on in the community he served and in the generations continuing that spiritual heritage.

Alongside the many members of the faithful, the event was attended by representatives and activists from the Macedonian community, as well as representatives of Australian institutions.

A special guest at the commemoration was the newly appointed Macedonian Ambassador to Australia, His Excellency Mr Stojanche Kitanoski, making his first visit to Melbourne since presenting his credentials. We were also honoured by the presence of Ms Bronwyn Halfpenny MP, State Member for Thomastown in the Parliament of Victoria.

Ambassador Kitanoski extended his congratulations on 23 October, the Day of the Macedonian Revolutionary Struggle, and wished the parish continued success and further achievements in its work among the Macedonian community, recognising its standing as the oldest established Macedonian church community in the diaspora.

The commemoration continued with a visit to the Macedonian Monastery of St Clement of Ohrid in Kinglake, linking the remembrance of spiritual and national figures with the living Orthodox tradition nurtured in Macedonian churches and monasteries throughout Australia. Those attending were welcomed by the monastery’s abbot, Father Gavril (Galev), who introduced them to the monastery’s history and its mission among the Macedonian people.

Through “Guardians of the Faith and the Macedonian Ideal”, the Macedonian Orthodox Community of Melbourne and Victoria reaffirmed its commitment to preserving the memory of Archbishop Angelarij and Macedonian national figures. Their legacy remains a call to continue preserving the Orthodox faith, Macedonian identity and the enduring connection with the homeland, Macedonia.

<style
