It is for the soul as air is for the body. We are physical and psychic beings, so besides caring for the body we need to care for the soul too. Caring for the soul is even much more important, because, the body, due to sin, has to undergo corruption and decay, and it is the soul that continues into existence (being).<\/p>\n<p>Prayer is giving, a continuous struggle and reconciliation with God. It is a communion and a conversation with Him.<\/p>\n<p>When praying we talk to our King who is at the same time our friend. With awe and dignity &#8211; freely, quietly, with no rush, attentively, with chosen words.<\/p>\n<p>It is the most convenient to say the prayer in half voice or in whisper, alone, preferably in a darkened room with the help of a prayer rope. It helps our concentration so that the thoughts won\u2019t wander about the objects in the room.<\/p>\n<p>The struggle of the spirit (prayer) needs help from the body. To stand still, that is to feel not comfort but a slight pain standing. It is also advisable to make prostrations (deep bows). Certainly, if we are exhausted, we can say the prayer while in a sitting position. The holy Fathers also used special techniques in their prayer practice, but this is for the more advanced,<\/p>\n<p>I will try to find you a good text or a link to read about prayer. I can now think of the writings of our elder Naum who writes very well about prayer. You can also find texts on prayer by the contemporary elders Joseph Spilaioti the Hesychast, Ephraim of Philotheou and Arizona, elder Porphyrios, elder Paisios\u2026 Also elder Sophrony of Essex and metropolitan Antony Bloom are good authors on prayer.<\/p>\n<p>But, above all, it is necessary to have a spiritual father, a guide, from whom you get a prayer rule which consists of certain prayers and readings of the Holy Scriptures, on a daily basis. Let us start our day with prayer and in the evening before we go to bed, let us end our day with prayer. Also, during the day you say mostly the Jesus prayer \u201cLord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me sinner\u201d and read form the Holy Scriptures, the lives of the saints and the works of the holy fathers. The prayer rule is specific and different for different people but it needs to be mutually agreed on with the spiritual father.<\/p>\n<p>This is about the meaning, the need and the practice of
