He will have to contend with condemnation, crucifixion, followed by resurrection on the third day. His disciples show no interest, even less, some kind of compassion for His (impending) suffering. Instead of sympathy, the brothers James and John Zebedee address their Master and ask Him to put them, one on His right, and the other on His left, when He goes &#8220;to His glory&#8221; (Mark; 10, 37).<\/p>\n<p>These two disciples show one kind of egoism and desire to rule over other people. It is interesting that the Lord Jesus Christ does not condemn their request and their desires, but shows them that He has no power to put them on His left or on His right, but He teaches them by saying, &#8220;Who among you wants to be greater, let him be your servant &#8220;(Mark 10: 43).<\/p>\n<p>In human nature, the task is set, that is, the aspiration for development and perfection. Often, people determine their dignity and achievement with their position. With the position they would achieve in this world, that is, in the environment where they reside. Therefore, the requirement to take a higher position is dictated by the very nature of the people. But in life, that aspiration often leads the person to perdition. A man who will give himself only to vainglory and loves to be respected, uses all his own powers to stand high above other people. He is struggling to get closer to his superior, that is, to his right or left, but not to the Lord, but to his earthly superior. At first he tries to be only influential, or to make an impact on him, and in time to take his place.<\/p>\n<p>It is astonishing that the Lord Jesus Christ does not condemn His disciples, who have demanded to be higher in the kingdom of heaven. He does not ask them ,why they seek that, when He tells them about His suffering. He does not say, that what they are thinking is wrong and what they are seeking is sin, but He teaches them what it means, for a person to have a high position. His task is to serve other people, that is, to do good deeds for all people around him.<\/p>\n<p>The desire and striving for power and position can be sinful and, literally, destructive to the human soul. The desire will be devastating if it is required only for its personal purpose, there is no difference whether it is for a material, social or political purpose. Therefore, it is a sin for anyone who asks to rule over other people. The free people are obliged to subdue their will, not to other people, but to God. There is a secret in the human authority, which we, to the end, cannot fully comprehend. But there is moral and God&#8217;s measurement in that secret. The authority transforms into salvation when it is directed to serve other people. As much as a person rises up the ladder of his service, that is, the authority, that much more internal humility is needed and the use of his position for the good of other people. It can be of political, economic and of another nature. For example, every rich person has some authority. If that authority and wealth are used to show his own strength, power and inhumanity, he loses his soul. But, if he uses his wealth and power to do good deeds and help people, then, he serves both God and people. In other words, wealth itself is not evil, or sin, but the way it is managed and for what purpose it is used.<\/p>\n<p>The authority is not important only in the material world. The authority is also present in the spiritual world, that is, among hierarchs and priests. They have spiritual authority over their faithful spiritual children, and if they use it, or more precisely, if they abuse it, building idols and saints from themselves, they not only harm themselves but also harm their spiritual children. They show by that vainglory and the love of being respected, and in the worst case it also leads into illness, that is, it turns into delusion.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s turn with sincere prayer to our Lord Jesus Christ. May He grant us the strength and wisdom to act properly with the authority given to us and that authority may benefit our souls and our faithful spiritual children and believers.
