He enters Jerusalem by riding a small donkey, as prophesied by the prophets of the Old Testament. We heard the following story from the Evangelical reading at the Holy Liturgy today.<\/p>\n<p>After instructing His disciples, the apostles, not to seek primacy the Lord Jesus Christ went to Jericho. When He got out of the city He cured a blind man and then He arrived in Bethany, where He resurrected Lazarus who had been deceased for four days. Lazarus was a friend of the Lord, and at the same time he was a rich man. At his home, his sisters Martha and Mary prepared dinner for the Lord Jesus. Martha took care of the preparation of the table, while Mary took a bottle of precious ointment and anointed the feet of the Lord Jesus and wiped His feet with her hair. The treacherous Judas grumbled about using up the precious fragrant, on the alleged reason that it could have been sold and the money could have been divided to the poor. But Christ resisted this wicked thought, saying: &#8220;Leave her be! She saved it for the day of my burial; because you always have the poor beside you, and you do not always have Me.&#8221; (John 12, 7 &#8211; 8) Great humility is shown by our Saviour despite knowing that they are preparing to kill Him. He says, &#8220;But one of you is the devil.\u201d (John 6, 70). Christ does not say who it is, giving him the opportunity for repentance and correction.<\/p>\n<p>The news about the resurrection of Lazarus in Bethany, was spread very quickly in Jerusalem. Lord Jesus Christ had previously healed from severe illnesses, raised the dead, but those treatments did not cause great interest among the people. They did not cause great interest because they happened among the ordinary people. But the news of the resurrection of Lazarus caused enormous interest because he was a prominent and important person. Many of the people believed in Christ and in His teaching. Therefore, on the next day, when Christ will enter Jerusalem with glory, He will be greeted by a huge crowd of people who will greet him shouting, &#8220;Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord, the King of Israel!&#8221; (John 12: 13).<\/p>\n<p>Christ is welcomed like a King, ceremonially, with spreading of clothes and green twigs on the path, just as the Roman kings and military leaders were welcomed after returning from a significant victory for the kingdom. Even though Christ has repeatedly said that His Kingdom is not from this world and is not temporary, but it is eternal, He was not understood in the true meaning, neither by the apostles nor by the people. They expected an earthly king who would liberate them from Roman captivity, not the King who would liberate them from sin and eternal torment. The entry of Christ into Jerusalem is in fact the fulfilment of the words of the prophet Zechariah: &#8220;Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Proclaim it aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem; Behold, your king comes to you: He is righteous and saving; He is gentle and mounted upon a donkey, even a young foal&#8221; (Zechariah 9: 9). The Apostles understood this prophecy only after the Resurrection of Christ and after His Ascension, that is, after being enlightened by the Holy Spirit on Pentecost. The welcoming of Christ with green twigs, signifies Christs&#8217; victory, that is, by the power of God, He defeats death and the devil.<\/p>\n<p>While the people and children glorified and received Christ in a ceremonial manner, the Pharisees, Sadducees and scribes were perturbed. They were afraid of Christ. They were afraid that the all the people would follow Him. Meanwhile, He severely reproached them for their hypocrisy and unbelief. Whilst people rejoiced, they prepared plans to frame, condemn and kill Him. Using lies and untruths, they will redirect the same people, who today ceremonially salute Christ with the words of \u201cHosanna,\u201d to ask Pilate to be crucified as the greatest transgressor, along with two robbers, only a few days later.<\/p>\n<p>While celebrating the ceremonial entrance of the Lord Jesus in Jerusalem, let us purify our hearts and souls from all bad thoughts and deeds. Cleansed and spiritually blessed by God&#8217;s mercy and His grace, let us be true followers of Christ, disciples and believers, so may we receive mercy of the Lord our God. May we never reject Christ and may we fulfil the will of God. Let us do good deeds, so may we obtain the grace of God to be poured upon us and save our souls, both now and for all eternity.<\/p>\n<p>Amen!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Palm Sunday<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>04.
